Why get an IV? + Introducing Whole Body Detox Medspa

There are many conditions that can be improved with IV nutrition therapy. If we were able to assimilate all of the nutrients we require to combat disease or achieve optimal health then we likely wouldn't notice any improvement after IV therapy but many of my patients notice huge improvement in how they function and how they feel after receiving IV therapy.

What conditions can be addressed with IV therapy?

I'm glad you asked! The original creator of the Myers IV formula (which can be amended and tailored for the particular condition being addressed), Dr. John Myers, found that his patients could improve their acute asthma, migraine headaches, hypertension, fibromyalgia, fatigue, menstrual cramps, upper respiratory illness, chronic sinusitis, seasonal allergies, cardiovascular disease and many other maladies.

IV fluids can also be administered for rehydration after an acute illness involving vomiting or diarrhea. Athletes who are in the heat for prolonged periods of time can received IV hydration to rehydrate more quickly with IV fluids than is possible with oral liquids for faster recovery and return to competition.

Are walk-in IV places legit?

You must realize that each IV has the potential to help or harm. Some medical conditions or enzyme disorders can make it very dangerous to receive IV therapy. If the walk-in IV provider has an MD on site (or trained nurse, nurse practitioner or physician's assistant) who does a medical history intake to determine risks versus benefits then they are likely legit. If they are also able to give you a list of the nutrients included in your IV before you receive it then they are probably above board.

So what's in a typical IV infusion?

The most basic infusion is modeled after the original Myer's infusion and will usually include Magnesium, Calcium, B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12), and vitamin C. The amounts of each nutrients can vary depending on the particular issue we are hoping to address and improve. We can also add other nutrients to this infusion, depending on the needs of the patient.

What IV formulas do you use?

For many patients with chronic illness we begin (after getting a history and possibly bloodwork) with a 'mini Myers' as a test dose. If tolerated, they can graduate to the regular Myers, Myers followed by a glutathione push for enhanced detoxification, Immune Boost, Super Immune Boost or High Dose vitamin C formula. Most IVs can be followed with a glutathione push if indicated.

Sometimes we customize the IV formula by adding additional nutrients to the formula they usually receive. For example, if a patient normally gets an Immune Boost but has an additional issue the day of the IV we can alter the formula slightly to address the new problem. The additional issues are usually an acute headache, infection, menstrual cramps or elevated blood pressure.

Can't I just take some supplements?

Given that our food supply in America is woefully deficient in many critical nutrients, such as magnesium, it is always wise to find out which nutrients you need and take high quality supplements with therapeutic levels of nutrients. Your health may improve significantly if you get therapeutic levels of all of the B vitamins, vitamin C, minerals, antioxidants, omega fatty acids and vitamin D.

Watch out for cheaper vitamin formulas that claim to provide multiple benefits - they often have very low levels of vitamins. If the percent RDA listed is at 100% or less for each nutrient in a particular supplement then you are not getting therapeutic levels. Remember that the RDA is a very low level of nutrient supplementation. When it was first published, it was to approximate the MINIMUM amount of a nutrient needed on a daily basis to maintain health.

I want people to do more than scrape by nutritionally! Functionally, there are optimal levels of nutrients for each individual, depending on their current state of health. These can be determined by your Functional provider - who can also curate for you the most beneficial supplements to deliver the appropriate amounts of nutrients needed to improve health and maintain optimal health.

BUT - remember that many persons with health issues have compromised gut function and can't absorb nutrients in supplements. Also, certain nutrients like magnesium and vitamin C, even with maximum absorption, still cannot reach therapeutic levels in the bloodstream with oral dosing. That is why, in Obgyn, if a pregnant woman has preterm contractions, we provide IV magnesium and not oral. Or, if someone is in the emergency department with acute asthma, they may receive IV magnesium and not oral.

Also, to fight off viruses, other infections and improve immune response to pathogens, higher doses of vitamin C (above 10000mg per dose) are needed to achieve the serum levels needed to kill the invaders. It is not possible to get those high serum levels of vitamin C with oral doses.
